CITY OF GRAYLING RESIDENTS – OUTDOOR BURNING RULES

The City of Grayling regulates outdoor burning to ensure public safety. Certain types of fires are allowed, but many are restricted or prohibited under Ordinance 16-2009.

What’s Allowed:

  • Recreational fires (campfires) in a fire ring, pit, or outdoor fireplace using clean, untreated wood.
  • BBQ grilling with charcoal, propane, or natural gas.
  • Limited burning of brush or clean wood debris on large residential lots (over 150 feet wide and 18,000 sq. ft.).

What’s Not Allowed:

  • Burning of garbage, leaves, lawn clippings, or construction materials.
  • Smudge fires or anything that produces thick, noxious smoke.
  • Fires within 30 feet of buildings or streets (except approved recreational fires).
  • Use of burn barrels.

Important: Violations can result in a $1,000 fire department response fee, plus additional fines.

Before you burn: Always check for burn bans or permit requirements, especially during dry conditions.
